Cooley Is New SVDC President
Bernard H. Cooley has been named president of Sapphire Valley Development Corp. in a move by Realtec Incorporated to give operating independence to its projects in the Carolinas.
William A. Walker remains Sapphire Valley's executive vice president and general manager, while B. Turner Schley has been named vice president at the project.
In other appointments announced by Realtec President Stanley P. Whitcomb, Jr., Ron Dillinger is the Sapphire Valley controller and Dean W. Eaton is manager of Fairfield Inn. [1]
Whitcomb said Realtec's diversification took place in order to make the Carolinas projects more responsive to their particular problems and better able to act swiftly on those problems.
In addition to Sapphire Valley, Realtec resort/residential communities are at Connestee Falls near Brevard and Keowee Key near Walhalla and Seneca, S.C.
Cooley joined Realtec last fall as an executive assistant to Whitcomb and, prior to becoming president of the subsidiary corporation, spent a majority of his time at Sapphire Valley.
He gives Sapphire Valley a wealth of knowledge and experience in hotel and resort management and development gained during three decades in primarily the Florida and Caribbean areas.

## Big Blow, Little Damage
The early morning of Feb. 22 will be long remembered by folks at Sapphire Valley, and not because it was the anniversary of the birth of George Washington.
What will be recalled for years to come is the storm that swept through the Valley with winds reportedly gusting to more than 90 miles per hour and three inches of rain in as many hours.
And heads will shake for a time at the fact that although trees were uprooted in every direction, property damage was negligible.
Although the weather forecast the evening before had called for a fast-moving front through the area, no one was really prepared for what arrived at about 3 a. m.
Lightning flashed almost incessantly, thunder rolled through the Valley, rain moved almost horizontally and trees were buffeted by winds that seem to be constantly changing direction.

## Sapphire Valley Shows Its Colors
Old Glory and the colors of the State of North Carolina now have a place of honor at Sapphire Valley.
The national and state flags fly daily from a new flagpole that has been erected outside the Information Center on U.S. 64.
